Novel inverter technologies and flexibility in PV systems (EUPI-PV Partnership)

This is an Innovation Action, evaluated in a single-stage round, with costs paid as a fixed lump sum tied to agreed work packages rather than reimbursed actual costs. The Commission expects to fund three projects from a topic budget of EUR 18,000,000, each carrying an EU contribution of up to EUR 6,000,000. Proposals must demonstrate new inverter hardware built on wide-bandgap semiconductors such as GaN or SiC that can supply synthetic inertia and grid services at higher power density, lower cost and improved reliability, including at medium voltage. Work must use control and power hardware-in-the-loop techniques to test how multiple inverters interact at shared points of common coupling, ensure electromagnetic compatibility against current and emerging standards, and connect inverters and other components — batteries, PV modules, the grid — into a shared communication layer that supports digital twins and predictive monitoring. Proposals must also evaluate system integration and cybersecurity and provide guidance on future development needs such as recyclability, and must report results back to the EUPI-PV Partnership to support its KPI monitoring.
