EIC Pathfinder Challenges is the thematically directed track of the European Innovation Council's Pathfinder programme, funding breakthrough scientific research at TRL 1–4 within predefined challenge areas announced in the annual EIC Work Programme. Unlike the Open track, which accepts any scientific field, Challenges restricts proposals to specific topics the EIC has designated as high-priority. The 2026 Challenges budget is €96 million, with grants up to €4 million per project. The 2026 deadline is 28 October 2026 — a future date at time of research — giving teams time to develop full proposals against the defined challenges.

Pathfinder Challenges permits single applicants, which is a significant structural difference from the Open track (which requires a minimum consortium of three entities). Consortia of three or more independent legal entities from different EU Member States or Horizon Europe Associated Countries remain the standard and preferred structure. All entity types — companies, universities, research organisations, non-profits — are eligible. As with all Pathfinder actions, 100 percent of eligible costs are covered and no co-funding is required. Business Acceleration Services are available to all funded teams.

Specific 2026 challenge topics are published in the EIC Work Programme document; applicants must verify the current list on the Horizon Funding and Tenders Portal before preparing a proposal. NCPs and challenge-specific FAQs are available for each topic. Evaluators assess scientific excellence, the transformative potential of the proposed breakthrough, and the capacity of the team to execute against the defined challenge. Teams should read the EIC Portfolio Strategic Plans for each challenge area to understand what directions the EIC considers under-explored and where the EIC expects the scientific frontier to move.
