Funds research into off-grid renewable energy storage that removes fossil-fuel backup from critical infrastructure like hospitals and data centres.
This is meant to help critical infrastructure run on renewable energy alone when it's off-grid or cut off from the wider network, removing the fossil-fuel generators that currently serve as backup and building up Europe's own lead in off-grid storage technology. The Commission wants cost-efficient off-grid energy storage solutions for renewable energy tailored to critical infrastructure — hospitals, transport hubs, data centres and utilities — that handle storage scale, compromised grid interaction, potential shortages of critical materials and multi-energy needs. It wants proposals to test resilience against high-impact, low-probability events, both on-grid and off-grid, and encourages including Ukrainian beneficiaries to support Ukraine's reconstruction. Where relevant, proposals should also weigh how critical infrastructures depend on one another and build in system redundancy.
