Pre-commercial appraisal for CO2 aquifer storage
Funds site appraisal and an injection pilot test in a deep saline aquifer to speed up CO2 storage development, mainly in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe.
Costs are paid as a fixed lump sum rather than reimbursed actual spending, under the Commission's decision authorising lump-sum contributions in Horizon Europe. Injection tests can be run with water alone to hold down cost and testing time; adding CO2 or nitrogen to test injectivity under different phases is allowed but not required. The Commission wants applicants to find and evaluate candidate storage sites, running one injection pilot test at minimum in a deep saline aquifer at least 800 metres deep, to help close Europe’s CO2 storage capacity gap, particularly in Central, Eastern and Southern Europe. It wants proposals to work with a national competent authority to confirm the site is legally usable for CO2 storage and to show, from prior data, that there is no significant leakage or environmental risk.
