The European Commission wants systematic, large-scale in-situ observation of species and habitats across terrestrial, freshwater and marine ecosystems in the EU and Associated Countries, using harmonised, standardised protocols. It wants the resulting data to be usable for modelling — feeding directly into the companion topic on ecosystem modelling (BIODIV-05) — and to help competent authorities track progress against EU biodiversity and Nature Restoration Regulation targets.
