The Commission wants projects that close the data gaps on where aquatic litter — plastic, microplastic, nanoplastic — comes from, where it ends up, and how much of it there is, across Europe's freshwater and marine environments. It wants a harmonised, cost-effective, pan-European monitoring strategy that environmental authorities can actually adopt, feeding into the Marine Strategy Framework Directive.
