Proposals must build evidence for a causal link between exposure to specific pollutants — in occupational, living or social environments — and neurological, neurodegenerative or neurodevelopmental diseases classified under ICD-11 chapters 6 and 8, focusing on one or more vulnerable or exposed population groups. Work should draw on the exposome framework, biomarker and imaging methods, and longitudinal or cohort data, and applicants are encouraged to use experimental methods that don't rely on live animals where the data would be equally valid. Any human biomonitoring or chemical-monitoring data collected must be shared through the EU's Information Platform for Chemical Monitoring, working with the Joint Research Centre, the European Chemicals Agency or another relevant EU agency.
