Bio-fabricated materials for sustainable and beautiful construction
Funds development and testing of new bio-fabricated construction materials that can later be mass-produced at competitive cost.
Bio-fabricated materials remain underexplored as an alternative to conventional construction materials, facing technical and regulatory hurdles, high production costs, limited expertise among construction professionals, and low acceptance across the construction ecosystem; the Commission wants two materials that change that by reaching mass-scale production at competitive cost. This single-stage H…
The European Commission wants at least two new sustainable bio-fabricated construction materials with innovative features — such as self-repair, carbon storage, or heating/cooling capability — usable for interior, exterior or structural applications and compliant with EU standards. Proposals must assess each material's structural, mechanical, thermal, acoustic, health-related, durability and aesthetic properties under changing environmental conditions, and study its feasibility for mass-scale production using techniques like 3D printing, robotics or AI-assisted manufacturing.
