RIIM Start-Up
Funds Indonesian startups commercializing research outputs for market deployment and scale-up support.
RIIM Start-Up is a rolling grant program administered by Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to help research teams commercialize their outputs through the formation of new startups. Launched on 26 July 2024, the program operates year-round with continuous intake. Each selected team receives IDR 300 million per year — a fixed amount rather than a competitive award — making it one of the few BRIN programs with a published, predictable grant size. The funding supports commercialization activities including translating research outputs (hilirisasi riset) into market-ready products and services through a new company vehicle.
Eligible applicants are research teams affiliated with BRIN itself, Indonesian universities, local government bodies, or other research institutions registered and operating in Indonesia. Individual applicants are not eligible. The application process begins with submission through the portal at pendanaan-risnov.brin.go.id. Teams without prior incubator experience enter up to six months of structured pre-incubation with mentoring before the full IDR 300 million funding is released. Teams that have already graduated from a recognized incubator may bypass the pre-incubation stage entirely and receive their funding directly upon selection.
The program aligns with Indonesia's national technology sovereignty agenda, prioritizing sectors such as biotechnology, agritech, energy, food technology, hardware, and medical technology, among others. Because intake is rolling, teams are not locked into annual batch schedules and can submit whenever their research and commercialization plans are ready. Successful applicants are expected to demonstrate a credible research output that serves as the basis for the startup, and to show a viable path to market within the funded period. BRIN conducts monitoring and evaluation throughout the award period.
