JIC LP Fund Commitments
Provides anchor commitments for Japanese venture and private equity managers in sectors less served by private investors.
Japan Investment Corporation (JIC) is a government-backed sovereign investment institution established in September 2018 under Japan's Industrial Competitiveness Enhancement Act, operating under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). JIC's LP commitment program provides anchor capital to domestic Japanese VC and PE fund managers, filling a gap where private institutional investors are reluctant to invest. As of December 2025, JIC has made commitments to 60 funds totalling JPY 2,542.8 billion (approximately USD 17 billion), of which JPY 1,361.1 billion has been paid in (53.5% progress rate). The strategy splits roughly 23% VC and 77% PE and other fund types.
Eligible fund managers are Japan-focused VC funds, buyout funds, and multi-strategy vehicles. JIC does not commit to foreign-domiciled funds as a primary strategy, though a small number of overseas-domiciled vehicles (e.g., Cayman-structure funds investing in Japan) appear in the portfolio. Notable commitments across 2020–2025 include Beyond Next Ventures, ANRI, Drone Fund, Dimension, Spiral Capital, General Atlantic Investment Partners 2025, and NSSK IV. Commitments are made on a rolling deal-flow basis with no published call schedule.
This is an LP equity vehicle, not a grant program. Fund managers seeking JIC as an anchor LP engage directly with JIC's investment team. JIC evaluates alignment with its mission to strengthen Japan's industrial competitiveness, the fund manager's track record, sector focus (biotechnology, deep tech, climate, robotics, semiconductors, and adjacent sectors are well represented in the portfolio), and the fund's potential to catalyze private co-investment. Operations of JIC are mandated through March 31, 2050 following a June 2024 law revision.
Commits anchor LP capital from Japan's sovereign investment body to domestic VC and PE fund managers operating in sectors where private institutional investors are reluctant to invest.
