Navigating Transformative AI — Capacity Building
Supports the AI safety workforce through fellowships, events, community groups, and media resources.
Eligibility · Global — open worldwide
Coefficient Giving's Navigating Transformative AI Fund offers a rolling, open application track for capacity-building work aimed at reducing risks from transformative AI. The fund — formerly the Open Philanthropy AI Safety program — has been a major force in the AI safety field since 2015, predating widespread awareness of large-language-model risks by seven years. Coefficient Giving, which directed over $1 billion in grants in 2025, operates the Navigating Transformative AI Fund as one of its core program areas, with the explicit goal of ensuring advanced AI systems are safe and well-governed.
The capacity-building track is open to any entity type — for-profit companies, nonprofits, universities, research organizations, and individuals — from any country. Eligible activities include supporting professional networks in the AI safety field, helping new practitioners enter the field, producing content that contribuves to public discourse on AI risks, and developing educational or community infrastructure that expands the pipeline of people working on AI risk reduction. Award sizes for the capacity-building track are not published publicly. The track operates on a rolling basis with no stated deadline.
A separate AI Governance RFP, which closed January 25, 2026, covered technical governance, policy, and international coordination work at typical award sizes of $200,000 to $2 million per year. The capacity-building track is the currently open pathway for teams whose work does not fit RFP-specific technical governance criteria. Applicants with a compelling theory of change for field-building, community development, or public education in AI safety should apply through the fund's published application page. Teams whose work is closer to technical AI safety research should email technicalaisafety@coefficientgiving.org, as that sub-track has no open RFP.
Capacity-building efforts that address risks from transformative AI, including supporting professional networks, helping new people enter the field, and contributing to public discourse on AI safety.
