The Qatar-Spain Innovation Program (QASIP) is a bilateral business innovation grant jointly administered by the Qatar Research, Development and Innovation Council (QRDI) and Spain's Centre for Technological Development and Innovation (CDTI), designed to fund joint research and development projects between companies registered in Qatar and Spain. Unlike QRDI's academic grant programs, QASIP is exclusively open to for-profit companies; universities, non-profits, and individuals are ineligible. The 3rd cycle launched on 25 February 2025 with a submission deadline of 3 July 2025. Award decisions were targeted for February 2026.
The Qatari side of the program funds up to QAR 500,000 per year for a maximum project duration of three years, totaling up to QAR 1,500,000 per project. QRDI covers between 70% and 90% of qualifying manpower expenditures and up to 60% of capital expenditure and other operating expenses, provided that 100% of the QRDI-supported budget is spent inside Qatar. Spain's CDTI finances the Spanish partner under its International Technological Cooperation Projects framework. Priority areas for the 3rd cycle included smart cities, health, resource sustainability, and digital technology, though the program accepts proposals from all sectors.
A joint application must include at least one company registered in Qatar and one registered in Spain, and both companies must be independent with no common ownership, management, or control. Project duration ranges from one to three years, and R&D activities must be conducted in both countries by their respective awarded companies. The selection process used two stages: an eligibility review with feedback by 15 July 2025 and a second-stage submission of additional information by 25 September 2025. Applications were submitted via the Innolight portal. The QRDI contact for the program is qasip@qrdi.org.qa, and the CDTI contacts are Jose Manuel Duran and Francisco Sanchez. A 4th cycle is anticipated in calendar 2026.
Joint R&D projects between companies registered in Qatar and Spain, with priority in smart cities, health, resource sustainability, and digital technology.
