The START programme is Cambridge Enterprise's pre-seed equity vehicle for founders building science-led and AI startups with a demonstrable connection to the University of Cambridge. Operated under Cambridge Enterprise's Founders at the University of Cambridge suite — alongside SYNC (co-founder matching) and SPARK (four-week residential incubator) — START specifically accelerates ventures reaching the point of seeking earliest-stage investment. The programme channels investment from the University Discovery Fund, a philanthropic donated capital vehicle founded in 2008 with £1.8 million that had returned £8.6 million by 2026 across a 30-plus-company portfolio. Applications are submitted through founders.cam.ac.uk.

Every START investment is structured as a £20,000 equity ticket, giving the fund a shareholding stake in the venture rather than issuing a non-dilutive grant. Eligible applicants include current students, researchers, postdocs, alumni, and founders commercialising Cambridge IP. The programme is sector-broad — portfolio companies span life sciences, AI, materials, energy, and climate technology — and accepts applications on a rolling basis with no fixed annual deadline. START investment is paired with multi-stage venture building support, mentoring from Cambridge Enterprise's team, and access to Cambridge's global community of scientific and commercial experts.

Successful applicants can anticipate a structured review process through founders.cam.ac.uk, culminating in an equity subscription at the £20,000 ticket size. Because the instrument is equity rather than a grant, founders should expect Cambridge Enterprise to hold a minority stake and participate in follow-on financing discussions. The University Venture Fund — which has committed an additional £30 million of University capital, including £10 million ring-fenced for sustainability — and the UCEF co-investment series (£30.4 million raised from alumni and associates) provide the natural follow-on capital stack for START portfolio companies that progress to seed and Series A.

Deploys £20,000 pre-seed equity tickets into science-led and AI startups with a University of Cambridge connection, paired with mentoring and venture building support.
