IP Group plc is a London Stock Exchange-listed science-commercialization investor (ticker: IPO) founded in 2001 through a commercialization deal with the University of Oxford's Chemistry Department. The firm deploys its permanent balance-sheet capital directly into portfolio companies at every stage from initial formation through later-stage growth. As of FY2025, IP Group's closing NAV was £975.1 million with gross cash of £211.0 million, and the firm has backed more than 600 companies, creating over 15,000 jobs across its portfolio. In FY2025 alone, IP Group invested £70.5 million across 31 companies, while portfolio companies collectively raised £914 million — a 17% year-on-year increase.
Balance-sheet investments are concentrated in three sector verticals: HealthTech (digital health, life sciences, medtech), DeepTech (AI, quantum computing, advanced hardware), and CleanTech (energy transition, agtech, future mobility). IP Group operates primarily in the UK but also has offices in Melbourne and a North America presence established in 2013. Notable past portfolio companies include Oxford Nanopore Technologies, Hinge Health (NYSE IPO 2025), and Featurespace (acquired by Visa 2024). Investment is equity only — no grants, no debt.
This is not a grant program with open application rounds or published deadlines. IP Group accesses deal flow primarily through relationships with university technology-transfer offices at partner institutions including Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, Bristol, and — via the 2025 Northern Gritstone collaboration — Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, and Sheffield. Founders and academics seeking investment contact the firm through the Academics/Founders/Entrepreneurs inbound channel at ipgroupplc.com. There is no scheduled call for applications; investment decisions are made on a continuous basis as deals are sourced through the partnership network.
