Funds research into how plants deal with the microbes, pests and other organisms living on and around them. NSF and USDA pay for it jointly.
Plants never live alone. This programme, run jointly by NSF and the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture, funds research into the interactions that follow — with viruses, bacteria, oomycetes, fungi, other plants and invertebrates, whether those partners help the plant or attack it.

Mechanisms of beneficial and antagonistic interaction between plants and their viral, bacterial, oomycete, fungal, plant and invertebrate symbionts, pathogens and pests, in model and agricultural systems, from molecular mechanism through to agricultural translation. Purely ecological work without mechanism is out of scope.
