The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's Student Research Fellowship Awards provide financial support for students at US-accredited institutions to complete a minimum of ten consecutive weeks of IBD-relevant research under the supervision of a qualified faculty mentor. The program funds undergraduate, medical, and graduate students who are not yet engaged in thesis research. Up to sixteen awards are available annually, each providing a one-time payment of $2,500 made directly to the institution rather than to the student. The program is funded by the Doyle Family. The 2026 cycle had a submission deadline of March 31, 2026 at 11:59pm EST; award decisions were issued in mid-to-late June 2026 following an April–May review period.

Eligibility requires that the applicant hold no similar salary support from another agency during the fellowship period. The faculty mentor must be affiliated with an accredited US institution and actively running an IBD-relevant research project; relatives of the applicant and the applicant's existing laboratory supervisor are not eligible to serve as mentor. Applications are submitted through proposalCENTRAL (GMID=96) and do not require a prior letter of inquiry — an exception to the Foundation's general two-step process for most other grants. Contact for the program is training_awards@crohnscolitisfoundation.org.

Awardees must submit both a financial statement and a scientific report to the Foundation by September 1 of the award year. Failure to fulfill these reporting obligations bars the awardee from receiving future Foundation awards. All publications arising from fellowship-supported work must acknowledge Foundation support. Students preparing applications should ensure their mentor can commit the required supervisory time and that their institution can accept the award payment, as the stipend is disbursed to the institution, not the trainee directly.

Any IBD-relevant research project conducted by an undergraduate, medical, or graduate student under faculty supervision at a US-accredited institution, spanning laboratory or clinical approaches.
