Precision Inertial Navigation & Positioning On an Integrated Tesseract (PINPOINT)
Funds new physics for inertial sensors built to break a decade-long precision plateau.
Every drone, missile and vehicle that has to know where it is without GPS leans on an inertial measurement unit, and the small, cheap version of that sensor β MEMS-based β has not gotten meaningfully better in a decade. PINPOINT exists to break that plateau rather than refine around it.
The physics on offer is deliberately unconventional: electromagnetically levitated proof masses, non-linear resβ¦
Novel inertial sensor physics for tactical and unmanned missions β including but not limited to electromagnetically levitated proof masses, non-linear resonators, and high-velocity tethered microsystems β co-designed with the real-time adaptive control systems needed to stabilise them, excluding evolutionary improvements on existing MEMS IMU approaches.
