Michigan State University's Shared Research Infrastructure Program (SRIP), administered by the MSU Office of Research and Innovation, funds one-time, non-recurring capital purchases of shared research equipment and infrastructure that will benefit a diverse range of MSU researchers. The program offers three tracks: Track 1 awards up to $100,000 with cost-share encouraged but not required; Track 2 awards $100,000 to $4,000,000 with a mandatory 25% cost-share from the requesting college or units (OR&I covers up to 75%); and Track 3 offers planning grants up to $20,000 to help investigators prepare large Track 2 proposals. Eligible items include specialized scientific instruments, large research databases, and other shared infrastructure — purchases used primarily for teaching or for a single researcher's laboratory do not qualify.

Eligibility is limited to MSU faculty holding tenure-track or multi-year fixed-term appointments, and to MSU staff; no external applicants are accepted. A pre-application to college Associate Deans is due before the main submission, which for the 2026 cycle was February 17, 2026, submitted to OR&I at proposal@msu.edu. Applications consist of a single PDF plus separate support letters addressing resource justification, evidence of broader user base, a business plan for ongoing operation and maintenance, and documentation of prior attempts to secure federal funding for the same item. The next cycle is expected to open in January 2027.

Proposals with the strongest track records demonstrate multi-department user communities, established maintenance funding arrangements, and alignment with MSU institutional research priorities. Track 2 applicants should confirm cost-share commitments with their college before beginning the application, as proposals lacking confirmed match have historically not advanced past initial college-level review.

Funds one-time purchases of specialized shared research equipment, large databases, and infrastructure at MSU benefiting a diverse range of researchers across three award tracks up to $4 million.
