NICHD R21 Exploratory/Developmental Grant
Supports high-risk exploratory projects in NICHD research areas through small pilot grants in the United States.
The NICHD R21 Exploratory/Developmental Grant funds high-risk, early-stage research concepts that introduce new scientific directions relevant to the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development's mission. R21 awards are explicitly suited for ideas not yet ready for a full R01 — they support proof-of-concept work, novel methodological development, and pilot data generation. NICHD's scope covers all twelve scientific branches of its Division of Extramural Research, from contraception and fertility through maternal-fetal medicine, child development, pediatric infectious disease, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and medical rehabilitation under NCMRR.
Eligible applicants include US-based universities, research organizations, non-profits, and small businesses; individuals may not apply directly. NICHD applies no fixed payline in FY2026; award decisions integrate scientific merit, portfolio balance, and program priorities across a $1.76 billion budget. R21 applications are shorter in scope and lower in direct costs than R01 applications, making them appropriate for exploratory aims. Three clinical trial variants apply: clinical trial required, behavioral/social/economic study required, and clinical trial not allowed. Standard NIH receipt dates apply across multiple cycles per year.
Prospective applicants should contact the relevant NICHD branch program officer before submission to confirm that the proposed science addresses a genuine gap in the institute's research portfolio. Because NICHD maintains no fixed payline, score alone does not guarantee funding — program officer engagement and alignment with active portfolio priorities meaningfully improve competitive standing. R21 projects that generate compelling pilot data frequently transition to full R01 applications in subsequent cycles.
Novel, high-risk exploratory research concepts across NICHD's twelve scientific branches — reproductive biology, child development, pediatrics, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and rehabilitation — not yet ready for a full R01.
