NICHD R21 Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant
Supports early exploratory child health projects that test bold ideas and novel methods.
The R21 supports exploratory and developmental research that introduces new concepts or novel approaches in NICHD-relevant areas. It is a smaller, less detailed application than the R01 and designed for higher-risk, hypothesis-generating science. NICHD lists the R21 as an active mechanism across its twelve scientific branches, including Down syndrome (INCLUDE project uses R21 for exploratory awards via RFA-OD-27-003). R21 follows standard NIH multiple-receipt-date schedules. NICHD's FY2026 strategy does not set a fixed payline for R21; decisions are made on scientific merit and portfolio balance.
Each grant below is a distinct funding opportunity with its own eligibility, scope, and deliverables.
