AISI Challenge Fund for AI Safety and Security Research
Funds AI safety and security research, up to £200,000 per project.
The fund runs a multi-stage review process, giving applicants detailed application packs, clarification-question documents and cost guidance. It launched in March 2025, and the first round has already completed its review cycle; AISI expects further rounds as it expands its external research funding portfolio, though none is confirmed as currently open.
The AISI Challenge Fund backs work tackling the dangers posed by frontier AI models, sitting apart from AISI's narrower Alignment Project (stopping bad model behaviour) and its Systemic Safety programme (wider societal deployment risks). It wants proposals built around a specific, sharply scoped safety or security problem, with a clear plan and results that can actually be measured.
