IDC Green Tourism Incentive Programme
Funds sustainability retrofits for privately owned tourism operators in South Africa by supporting energy and water efficiency improvements.
The Green Tourism Incentive Programme (GTIP) is a non-repayable grant administered by the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) for privately-owned South African tourism businesses. The program funds energy efficiency upgrades, water conservation measures, and renewable energy installations, with the dual goal of reducing operating costs for tourism SMEs and lowering the sector's environmental footprint. GTIP is specifically designed for small and micro tourism enterprises with B-BBEE Exempt Micro Enterprise (EME) or Qualifying Small Enterprise (QSE) status.
The grant covers between 50% and 90% of the total solution cost on a sliding scale, up to a maximum of R1 million per applicant — the recipient must co-fund the balance, which is at minimum 10% of total cost. The program operates in two sequential phases: Phase 1 funds a resource efficiency audit to identify the most impactful interventions for the specific property; Phase 2 funds the actual implementation of the recommended solutions. This two-phase structure ensures that funded installations are tailored to each property's actual resource consumption profile rather than generic solutions. The application window was closed as of May 2026; the IDC has not published a reopening date.
Organizations eligible for GTIP must be privately owned, operate in the tourism sector in South Africa, and hold B-BBEE EME or QSE certification. The combination of non-repayability, meaningful subsidy rates (up to 90%), and a clear two-phase methodology makes GTIP one of the most accessible green infrastructure grant instruments available to South African tourism SMEs. Interested applicants should monitor gtipapplications@idc.co.za for reopening announcements and prepare B-BBEE certification documentation and a preliminary site assessment before submitting to expedite the Phase 1 audit process.
