The Township and Rural Entrepreneurship Programme (TREP) is a blended-finance initiative administered by South Africa's Small Enterprise Development and Finance Agency (SEDFA) to support micro-enterprises operating in townships and rural areas. The programme targets seven approved sectors: bakeries, automotive aftermarket, butcheries, clothing and textiles, personal care, spaza shops, and cooked food. TREP provides capital packages structured as 50% non-repayable grant and 50% loan, with total package sizes ranging from R50,000 to R500,000 and the grant component capped at R50,000 to R100,000 per beneficiary. The loan portion carries a fixed interest rate of 5% per annum with a six-month moratorium and a 36-month repayment term. Applicants must be South African nationals operating a township or rural business with annual turnover not exceeding R1,500,000 in most sub-schemes. Applications are submitted through smmesa.gov.za or accepted at designated Nedbank and Standard Bank branches and SEDFA offices. Required documentation includes CIPC registration, a SARS tax clearance status pin, a valid identity document, a municipal operating permit, and six months of bank statements. TREP operates on a continuous intake basis with no fixed annual deadline.
