FRS-FNRS Doctoral Fellowships (FRIA / FRESH / ASP)

Funds doctoral training across French-speaking Belgian universities through multiple fellowship tracks covering broad research disciplines.

FRS-FNRS doctoral fellowships are the foundation's main route for PhD training at French-speaking Belgian public universities. The family includes FRIA for research linked to industry or agriculture, FRESH for humanities and social sciences, ASP for general fundamental research, and specialist clinical tracks such as CSD, SD, and Télévie doctoral support. The structure is fixed and long enough to matter. FRIA and FRESH run for four years in two successive periods of 27 and 21 months. ASP runs for two years and can be renewed once, while CSD can last up to eight years on a part-time basis and SD can run up to four years on a part-time basis. The annual Grants & Fellowships call is handled through the e-space portal, and the governing documents are in French. The best applicants match the track to the project without forcing it. FRIA is for applied science and engineering work with an industry or agriculture link, FRESH is for the humanities and social sciences, ASP is the broad fundamental-research route, and Télévie is reserved for cancer and biomedical doctorates. Success depends on a host university and doctoral plan that fit the selected mandate cleanly from the start.
