FRS-FNRS (Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique) is the principal public research funder for the French-speaking Wallonia-Brussels community in Belgium. It is a state-funded non-profit public institution and the counterpart to FWO in Flanders, with a mandate centered on basic research, research careers and competitive project funding.

Its portfolio spans doctoral fellowships such as FRIA, FRESH and ASP, postdoctoral mandates, research projects and credits, equipment grants, infrastructure, and thematic lines including WELBIO, FRArt and other specialist calls. The annual projects-and-credits window runs in spring and summer, and the broader funding structure also includes international schemes such as bilateral projects, multilateral cooperation and Weave-linked calls.

FRS-FNRS uses an application calendar with recurring calls rather than a single open-ended route, and it channels awards through the French-speaking university ecosystem in Wallonia and Brussels. Its public posture is clear: support excellent basic science, build careers from doctoral stage through senior research, and keep the community connected to European and transnational collaboration.
