Excellence of Science (EOS) — FRS-FNRS + FWO Joint Programme

Runs a Belgium-wide joint excellence route linking language communities for four-year collaborative fundamental projects.

Excellence of Science, known as EOS, is the largest joint research programme in this part of the FRS-FNRS portfolio. It is run together with FWO and is built for cooperative fundamental research that depends on partners from both Belgian language communities. Projects run for four years and must include a cross-community partnership. The second edition distributed about 121 million euros across 37 projects, following the first 2017 round, which supported 38 projects with about 120 million euros over four years. That scale makes EOS much larger than the standard project call, but it is also more demanding administratively because applicants have to coordinate with both funders at the same time. The call rhythm appears to be biennial, and the programme is currently between cycles. The best fit is a large team with genuine shared scientific design, not two separate groups placed side by side. Successful proposals need a clear collaborative logic, complementary expertise, and enough organisational discipline to move through both agency processes in step.
