Mitacs Accelerate
Provides research teams and universities in Canada by guiding innovation from prototype work to stronger buyer demand.
Mitacs Accelerate is Canada's industry-academic internship programme, run by Mitacs with universities and research partners across the country. It pairs students and postdoctoral fellows with host organisations for funded applied research placements that move through a university channel rather than a direct applicant-to-funder route. Each unit is co-funded 50/50 by Mitacs and the partner organisation, at $15,000 for a student or graduate placement and $20,000 for a postdoctoral placement. Placements run 4 to 6 months, the program is rolling, the intake is moving between the legacy RAP portal and the newer Mitacs Plus portal, and funds flow through the academic institution rather than directly to the intern. Accelerate works best when the company or nonprofit has a concrete applied-research problem and an academic supervisor who can anchor the project. Because projects can stack over time, the strongest proposals are built around a repeatable collaboration plan, clear partner commitment and a placement scope that fits the university and IP rules.
