KAPPA Programme
Funds applied research partnerships between Czech organizations and Nordic counterparts in Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein.
KAPPA Programme was TA CR's bilateral applied research route under EEA & Norway Grants. It sat under the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic and connected Czech applicants with partners in Norway, Iceland, or Liechtenstein, with limited room for partners from outside the EEA. The programme is now wound down, but it remains a clear example of how TA CR used international co-funding to push applied R&D beyond the domestic market. Support ranged from EUR 500,000 to EUR 1.5 million per project, with CCS projects able to reach EUR 2.5 million, and the total envelope was about EUR 32.5 million, including EUR 5.2 million reserved for carbon capture and storage. Average aid intensity sat around 80%, while indirect costs were reimbursed at a 25% flat rate. Eligible applicants covered enterprises, universities, and research organisations, but the Czech main applicant had to hold the lead. The programme suits consortia that can pair a Czech lead with a Nordic partner and present a project that is clearly applied rather than purely academic. Because the route was one-off and is closed, it now matters mostly as a model for cross-border applied research design: the strongest bids were those with a defined work plan, a credible EEA partner, and enough industrial relevance to justify the high aid intensity.
