Finnish Centres of Excellence
Funds high-calibre research communities in Finland with eight-year grants and mandatory mid-term evaluation.
Finnish Centres of Excellence are part of the Research Council of Finland’s Forge funding stream and support high-calibre research communities with long-horizon funding architecture. The funding structure is eight years in length, typically implemented as a 5+3 year model with a mandatory mid-term evaluation gate. The 2022–2029 cohort is still in that mid-term evaluation phase in 2026. The programme is intended for research communities rather than individuals, with primary participants in universities and research organisations. It is most appropriate for teams with established international standing and a coherent community plan that can sustain scientific and societal outcomes across the full evaluation cycle.
