The Research Council of Finland, formerly the Academy of Finland, is Finland's national extramural research funder under the Ministry of Education and Culture. The name changed on 1 January 2024, but the mission stayed the same: it backs research at Finnish universities, research institutes, and individual researchers, with roughly EUR 543 million distributed in 2024 alongside the Strategic Research Council.

Its core routes are investigator-led project grants, Academy Projects, Academy Research Fellowships, Finnish Flagships, Centres of Excellence, and EuroHPC matching funds. In the current record, the Project Grant tops out at EUR 535,000 and the Academy Project at EUR 2.14 million, which places the larger instruments firmly in the range of multi-year research teams and research infrastructure.

The council is strongest for proposals that pair scientific quality with long-horizon capacity building. It also houses the Strategic Research Council, so the system covers both classic academic research and larger societal-impact programmes, especially in areas such as AI infrastructure and quantum work.
