Vinnova Strategic Innovation Programmes (SIP)
Supports major Swedish strategic innovation priorities through coordinated programs for societal and technology impact.
Vinnova's Strategic Innovation Programmes are the older Swedish umbrella for long-running, theme-based R&D collaborations. Vinnova co-funds 17 programmes across areas such as bioeconomy, mining, and electromobility, with examples including Smart City Sweden, BioInnovation, and Drive Sweden. Funding is a grant, with awards from SEK 500,000 to SEK 5 million and a median actual award of SEK 1.5 million. The programmes cycle multiple times per year, require a Swedish entity, and usually fund 50% of project cost. The target stage is TRL 3-7, which places them in applied development rather than basic research. The fit is strongest for applicants working inside a sector roadmap rather than a one-off proof-of-concept. Teams that can show sector relevance, a clear implementation plan, and a project that cannot be stacked with the same funding case are the most natural candidates, especially where the work lines up with one of the long-running SIP themes. They are a practical route for Swedish organisations that need repeated calls under one stable umbrella.
