University Discovery Fund is Cambridge Enterprise's philanthropic pre-seed vehicle for the earliest and riskiest stages of company formation. Founded in 2008, it began as a £1.8 million donated fund and has since returned £8.6 million, with £6.3 million of profit reinvested. The fund invests £20,000 equity tickets and works mainly through Cambridge Enterprise routes such as START, Social Ventures, and Founders at Cambridge. More than 30 companies have passed through the fund, and eligibility is limited to ventures connected to the University of Cambridge. It is the earliest capital in Cambridge Enterprise's stack, built to bridge the moment before a venture can justify larger institutional checks. Its role is to put small amounts of patient capital behind science with clear commercial potential before a company is ready for larger rounds. That makes it a fit for very early founders who need a first external cheque, structured support, and a Cambridge-linked pathway into the wider venture stack.
