Clinical Research Investigator-Initiated Awards (CRIA)

Funds investigator-led inflammatory bowel disease clinical studies through both early-career and senior scientist pathways.

Clinical Research Investigator-Initiated Awards, or CRIA, are the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's clinician-led clinical research route. The programme has two tracks, one for junior faculty and one for established faculty, and it is open to international applicants with no geographic limits on research sites. The award provides up to $250,000 a year in total costs for as long as three years, with milestone-based continuation and a 10% indirect cost cap. The junior track is aimed at Instructor or Assistant Professor level applicants who are generally within ten years of the doctorate, while the senior track is for established clinical researchers with a strong record, preferably NIH-funded. The foundation positions the route around pragmatic clinical research with tangible downstream value, including highly cited papers, guideline influence, and follow-on funding. The strongest applications will show a clear clinical question, a credible execution plan, and a topic that fits the foundation's IBD-specific priorities without overlapping with other same-topic applications.
