NC IDEA MICRO

Offers validation grants for North Carolina startups testing core assumptions.

NC IDEAUnited StatesGrant

NC IDEA MICRO sits under NC IDEA, the private foundation in Durham founded in 2006. NC IDEA says it has awarded more than $26 million since launch, served more than 2,000 companies, and helped generate more than 5,000 jobs, and MICRO is the smallest of its core founder grants. The program backs North Carolina startups that are still validating customer demand and core business assumptions with a flat $10,000 non-dilutive grant. MICRO runs twice a year, with Spring and Fall cycles around February and August, and it typically draws about 150 to 200 applications per round. The program is open to for-profit startups with at least one NC-resident founder who is moving toward full-time commitment, and the company should have a credible path to more than $2 million in revenue within seven years or venture funding within four years. U.S.-based companies are eligible; nonprofits, universities, research organizations, and individuals are not. Applicants with more than $250,000 in equity raised or more than $1 million in grants are viewed less favorably, and MICRO cannot be pursued in the same cycle as SEED. The best MICRO applications show customer discovery, early prototypes, or initial revenue without claiming to be scaled already. The grant works best when a founder needs a small amount of non-dilutive capital to test the market, sharpen the product story, and move toward the next financing step. MICRO is a fit for disciplined early-stage companies with a clear commercial test, not for teams that are already beyond validation.
