NC IDEA MICRO is a non-dilutive $10,000 grant program operated by NC IDEA, a Raleigh-based private foundation whose mission is to strengthen the North Carolina startup ecosystem. The program runs twice yearly — a Spring cycle and a Fall cycle — and is designed specifically for early-stage founders who are actively conducting customer discovery, building prototypes, or generating initial revenue. The Fall 2026 cycle timeline runs as follows: information webinar on July 14, applications open July 27, deadline August 24 at 5:00 PM EST, finalists selected September 25, finalist interviews October 5–14, and recipients announced October 20. Each cycle receives approximately 150–200 applications.

Eligibility requires the company to be headquartered in North Carolina with majority operations remaining in the state for at least 12 months after the award. At least one founder must be an NC resident, and full-time commitment to the venture is expected within 6–12 months of receipt. Applicants with prior equity funding exceeding $250,000 or total grant funding above $1 million are considered less competitive. NC IDEA evaluates applicants against a long-run trajectory of either achieving $2 million or more in annual revenue within 7 years or securing institutional venture capital within 4 years. The $10,000 award is delivered as a single non-dilutive payment.

Applicants must choose between MICRO and SEED within the same cycle — concurrent applications are not permitted. The selection process is competitive and staged: applications are screened, finalists are identified, and finalist interviews are conducted before final selection. Sectors across technology, hardware, biotech, medtech, agritech, food, energy, and climate are eligible. To be competitive, applicants should show concrete evidence of customer engagement or early revenue rather than a concept-stage idea, and should clearly articulate how $10,000 will advance a specific business validation milestone.

Non-dilutive $10,000 grants to early-stage North Carolina startups actively conducting customer discovery, building prototypes, or generating initial revenue, with a path to $2M+ revenue or VC funding.
