MIT is one of the world's leading research universities, primarily a research-performing organization that receives grants and contracts from federal agencies, foundations, and industry. MIT does not operate as a unified external grant-maker. Instead, several distinct MIT centers and initiatives run competitive programs for entrepreneurs and innovators: the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship (delta v accelerator, MIT $100K), MIT Sandbox Innovation Fund, and MIT Solve.

Of these, MIT Solve is the only program with truly global open eligibility — anyone worldwide can apply to its annual challenge cycles. MIT delta v, MIT $100K, and MIT Sandbox are closed to MIT-affiliated applicants only. The Engine and Engine Ventures are legally independent entities (separate nonprofit and VC fund respectively) that should not be catalogued under us-mit. MIT TLO is a tech-transfer office, not a grant-maker.
