Europe wants next-generation batteries designed and built in Europe, not just imported once someone else has already worked out how to make them at scale. This topic funds the scale-up step: taking a battery chemistry that already works as a lab cell and turning it into a real pilot production line, with cells built into a working module or pack.

Scaling a next-generation lithium-based battery — semi-solid-state, all-solid-state, or so-called "generation 5" chemistries, beyond today's generation-3 lithium-ion — from cell prototypes (TRL 4-5) to demonstrated pilot production and full module or pack integration (TRL 6-7), for one named transport mode: automotive, aviation, rail, or waterborne. Funded work covers scaling up anode, cathode and electrolyte production; building or adapting manufacturing equipment for higher-throughput cell production (laser patterning, vacuum sintering, solid-electrolyte deposition, precision stacking); designing the module or pack and its battery management system for the chosen application; and validating performance, durability and safety under realistic operating conditions.
