Horizon Battery Recycling Flexibility
Funds two €9.4M innovation projects that make battery recycling more flexible, efficient and ready for mixed European feedstocks.
Battery recycling plants need to process changing feedstocks, including production scrap and mixtures of lithium-ion chemistries, without losing recovery efficiency or economic viability. This scheduled Horizon Europe Innovation Action funds two €9.4 million projects to make existing recycling processes more adaptable and competitive.

Improve existing scaled battery-recycling processes so they can handle variable feedstocks, production scrap and mixed lithium-ion chemistries. Projects demonstrate adaptable sorting and pre-treatment where needed, optimize hydrometallurgical and/or pyrometallurgical processing, and recover high-purity battery-grade materials from black mass for re-entry into European battery manufacturing. They include techno-economic and life-cycle assessment, energy and footprint reduction, EU Batteries Regulation recovery targets, Safe and Sustainable by Design reference, and exploitation plans for scale-up and deployment.
