Horizon Flexible Battery Cell Manufacturing
Funds two €18.9M projects to make lithium-ion and sodium-ion cell production cheaper, cleaner, flexible and ready for industrial scale-up.
Battery cell manufacturing needs to become more competitive and sustainable while supporting more than one chemistry. This topic funds two large Innovation Actions to demonstrate flexible production technologies for lithium-ion and sodium-ion cells and reduce cost, energy use and environmental impact.

Developing and demonstrating next-generation, flexible and reconfigurable machinery and processes for lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery cell production. Projects should reduce CAPEX, OPEX, energy use and environmental footprint while maintaining or improving quality, using modular pilot lines, advanced mixing and electrode production, efficient dry-room assembly and formation, inline digital quality control, and techno-economic and life-cycle assessment to reach TRL 6-7.
