Horizon Energy: Hydropower Plant Refurbishment
Funds two €8.5M projects that modernise existing hydropower plants for efficient, flexible and climate-resilient electricity generation.
Hydropower has to become more flexible as electricity systems absorb more variable renewables, while existing plants face ageing equipment, harsher weather and tighter environmental constraints. This topic funds practical refurbishment and demonstration at existing hydropower plants.
Projects can modernise turbines, generators, draft tubes, nozzles and distributors; develop materials that improve…
Demonstrating hydropower technology solutions for efficient, forward-looking refurbishment of existing plants. Projects may improve turbines, generators, materials, digital instrumentation and controls, operational strategies, maintenance, concrete and embankment safety, or simulation and forecasting for harsher operating conditions. Solutions must be socioeconomically and environmentally sustainable, with assessment of biodiversity, ecological status, fish migration, water flows and sediment dynamics, while adapting plants to climate change and more variable renewable electricity.
