Retrofitting Infrastructure for Energy Storage
Funds €7.5M projects that turn obsolete energy and industrial infrastructure into secure, circular energy storage for a more flexible grid.
Europe needs more flexible energy storage, but new storage assets can be expensive and resource-intensive to build. This topic funds projects that give obsolete infrastructure a useful second life while demonstrating novel or improved storage technologies.
A project might retrofit an old hydropower dam or basin, a decommissioned power plant, a former industrial site, a coal mine or fossil-fuel in…
Demonstrate novel or improved energy storage technologies integrated with obsolete or outdated energy or other infrastructure, such as old hydropower dams and basins, decommissioned power plants, former industrial facilities, coal mines or fossil-fuel infrastructure. Projects should optimise storage capacity and efficiency while improving circularity, energy security and socioeconomic and environmental sustainability. They should use stakeholder outreach, address environmental impacts, apply secure-by-design principles and contribute to grid flexibility, while participating in the BRIDGE initiative.
