Horizon Biodiversity: Protected Area Resilience

Funds two €6.5M research projects building the tools to predict biodiversity loss and keep protected areas working as pressures intensify.

OpenEuropean CommissionEU

The EU has committed to legally protecting at least 30% of its land and 30% of its sea by 2030, matched by the global Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework. But naming an area protected doesn't guarantee it stays effective — as climate change, invasive species, pollution, and land- and sea-use pressures intensify, protection that worked a decade ago can quietly stop being enough. This topic fund

Research that tracks how the direct and indirect drivers of biodiversity loss — land- and sea-use change, exploitation of species, climate change, pollution, and invasive alien species — affect protected terrestrial, marine, and freshwater habitats and species over time, and builds predictive tools for how those pressures develop and compound over the medium and long term. Proposals define and test new management approaches for protected areas with measurable performance indicators, assess whether adaptive approaches such as assisted migration are needed, and address long-term ecological monitoring needs. Each proposal addresses one research field — A (terrestrial) or B (marine), both of which may include freshwater — and states it clearly on the application.
