Horizon Organic Intercropping Breeding

Funds €6M projects that breed organic crop varieties for stronger, more productive intercropping systems.

ScheduledEuropean CommissionEU

Most crop varieties have been bred for monocultures, where one species grows across a field. Intercropping is different: crops share space, light, water, nutrients and relationships with soil organisms, so a variety that performs well alone may not work well beside another crop. This topic funds breeding research designed for those multi-species systems.

Projects study the traits and mechanisms b

Research and innovation for organic breeding approaches that produce crop and variety combinations adapted to intercropping. Projects study above- and below-ground plant interactions, identify combinations that perform consistently together, develop testing and selection tools, and address Organic Heterogeneous Material and Organic Varieties Suitable for Organic Production where relevant. Activities are expected to reach TRL 4-5 by the end.
