Horizon Bio-CCU: Carbon to Products
Funds two €6M projects that use biotechnology to purify captured carbon and turn it into sustainable feedstock for industrial products.
Industry needs carbon feedstocks that do not depend on virgin fossil resources. This topic funds two projects that use biotechnology to capture, purify and convert gaseous carbon from industrial emissions or the atmosphere into useful feedstock for products.
Projects first review the state of research and the readiness, strengths, weaknesses and carbon-storage potential of life-science routes. Th…
Developing, testing and demonstrating life-science technologies for Carbon Capture and Use: concentrating and purifying gaseous carbon from industrial emissions or the atmosphere, then converting it into sustainable feedstock for industrial chemicals and materials. The work covers synthetic biology and/or living microorganisms, environmental and socio-economic assessment, business cases, scalability, markets, replication recommendations and spin-off feasibility. Demonstrations are expected to reach TRL 6-7 by the end of the project; food, feed, biofuels and syngas are excluded.
