Horizon Euratom: Stable Isotopes for Nuclear Medicine

Funds one €2M project to build EU production of medical isotopes like ytterbium-176, cutting reliance on Russian supply for cancer radiopharmaceuticals.

OpenEuropean CommissionEU

Europe's cancer clinics depend on a handful of rare stable isotopes to make the radioactive drugs used in nuclear medicine, and right now the key supplier is Russia. Ytterbium-176 is the sharpest example: it's the precursor for Lutetium-177, the isotope behind two cancer drugs already in wide use — Lutetium-177-PSMA for prostate cancer and Lutetium-177 Dotatate for neuroendocrine tumours. If that

Building EU production capacity for stable isotopes used as precursor materials in nuclear medicine — chiefly ytterbium-176, which feeds Lutetium-177 radiopharmaceuticals for prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours, plus related isotopes such as gadolinium for terbium production. Work runs TRL 5-7: prototyping, testing, demonstrating, piloting and scaling up the production process, with only limited R&D. One project is funded, at a fixed €2,000,000 lump sum.
