Europe's cancer clinics depend on a handful of rare stable isotopes to make the radioactive drugs used in nuclear medicine, and right now the key supplier is Russia. Building EU production capacity for stable isotopes used as precursor materials in nuclear medicine — chiefly ytterbium-176, which feeds Lutetium-177 radiopharmaceuticals for prostate cancer and neuroendocrine tumours, plus related isotopes such as gadolinium for terbium production. Work runs TRL 5-7: prototyping, testing, demonstrating, piloting and scaling up the production process, with only limited R&D. One project is funded, at a fixed €2,000,000 lump sum.
