Horizon Bioeconomy: Scalable Biorefinery Processing

Funds consortia to cut cost, solvent use, energy and water in biorefineries, tested across at least three industrial or demo-scale use cases.

OpenEuropean CommissionEU

Biorefineries can make chemicals, ingredients, materials and other products from biological resources, but separating and purifying those products often makes the process expensive and hard to scale. This topic funds new ways to handle that bottleneck while using fewer harsh solvents, fewer process steps, less energy and less water.

Developing scalable separation and purification technologies for biorefineries and testing them on at least three industrial or demo-scale use cases. The work can cover upstream or downstream processing, or both, and must improve at least two of solvent use, process-step efficiency, energy use and water use. It also covers compatibility with existing upstream processes, validation on selected bio-based products and a Safe and Sustainable by Design assessment.
