Urban LVDC Microgrid Demonstrations

Funds €7M projects that prove safe, efficient LVDC microgrids in buildings and help cities replicate them through digital twins.

Many modern devices—solar panels, batteries, LED lights, IT equipment, heat pumps and electric vehicles—already run on direct current. Connecting them through a low-voltage DC microgrid could avoid conversion losses, make local renewable energy easier to share and improve resilience during grid disruptions.

This topic funds projects that design and test safe LVDC systems in real urban settings. A

Develop and demonstrate safe, sustainable LVDC microgrid designs and tools that integrate building or neighbourhood DC loads, renewables, storage and demand response. Test a real LVDC microgrid across all electrical applications in at least one building or neighbourhood, and demonstrate virtual deployments in other building types, countries and cities with digital twins, including a renovation case and, where possible, a vulnerable urban area. Address lifecycle costs and benefits, regulatory and grid-code barriers, DC-fault safety, standards, training, SSH, an open workshop and a formal Memorandum of Understanding with the Cities Mission Platform.
