High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) Prize
Awards $200,000 in cash for new technology that strengthens the U.S. power grid.
DOE's Office of Electricity ran the prize through HeroX; up to four winning teams each received $50,000 from a $200,000 total cash pool. Entrants submit proposed HVDC solutions per the official rules before the deadline.
The prize is open to electrical and industrial engineers, computer scientists and power electronics researchers, who compete to develop new HVDC (high-voltage direct current) power and energy system solutions. The goal is to strengthen renewable distributed generation, improve transmission to population centers, and integrate HVDC into the U.S. energy grid.
