Copernicus Anthropogenic CO₂ Emissions Monitoring & Verification Support (CO2MVS) capacity: new and innovative methods to estimate the impact of fires on vegetation and related carbon fluxes
Funds one research project up to EUR 3 million to model how wildfires affect vegetation and carbon emissions inside the Copernicus CO2 monitoring system.
Activities can start at any technology readiness level, but the project as a whole is expected to reach TRL 5-6 by the end, measured on the ISO 16290 scale used specifically for the space sector rather than the generic Horizon Europe TRL definition. If the proposed work uses satellite-based earth observation, positioning or timing data, it has to rely specifically on Copernicus and/or Galileo/EGNO…
The Commission wants better fire-vegetation interaction modelling for the CO2MVS capacity, including how drought and burnt-area observations feed into fire emission estimates that in turn support the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service and Emergency Management Service. It expects the project to build on or improve existing process-based or empirical vegetation-fire models rather than start from scratch.
