Pays one project up to EUR 7.5 million to build a standard method for measuring how much fuel wind-assisted sails actually save on ships.
This is a single-stage Innovation Action, with the Commission funding just one project from the topic; applicants use the standard Horizon Europe application form for Innovation Actions. The Commission wants a standardised methodology for monitoring and verifying how much energy Wind-Assisted Propulsion systems — such as rotor sails or rigid wing sails — actually contribute to a ship's propulsion, so those savings can be counted reliably under the FuelEU Maritime Regulation and IMO emissions rules. Proposals must demonstrate at least one full-scale wind-assisted propulsion system on a real vessel and build a design-optimisation framework usable across different ship types.
